What does 99% unposed actually mean? Good question and If you’ve been exploring wedding photography options, you’ve probably seen a whole range of styles. Some photographers lean heavily into traditional, perfectly posed portraits. Others go for dramatic, editorial vibes—think fashion magazine meets wedding day. And then, there’s my style: ‘99% unposed.’ It’s more than just a catchy tagline; it’s a philosophy that shapes how I capture your day, ensuring your wedding photos feel as natural, relaxed, and authentic. My main part of how I work is to ensure my couples have great photos, but also have a great day. The better day you have… quite simply the better photos you have.

What does it actually mean? Let’s break it down.

The Heart of ‘99% Unposed’

At its core, ‘99% unposed’ means letting moments happen organically. I don’t direct, choreograph, or force you into uncomfortable positions (physically or emotionally). Instead, I observe, anticipate, and capture real moments as they unfold. From your mum tearing up during the ceremony to your best mate busting questionable moves on the dance floor—these are the moments you’ll cherish forever.

In addition I have been a guest at weddings where you the couple haven’t been seen for almost all of the drinks reception, and honestly it was awful.

That other 1%? Well, it’s reserved for the times when a bit of guidance is helpful. Think family group photos or a few relaxed portraits. Even then, I keep things casual and quick, so you’re not stuck posing while everyone else is enjoying the party. Weather allowing I always try to do photos towards the end of drinks reception to ensure you spend most the day with your friends and family.

Why Couples Love This Approach

Weddings are, at their best, emotional and unscripted. You’ve spent months (maybe years) planning this one day, so the last thing you want is to feel like you’re acting in a photoshoot. Here’s how my style benefits you:

1. Less Stress, More Fun

Your wedding day should be about you, not about meeting a photographer’s expectations. By embracing a documentary style, I blend into the background, capturing moments as they happen without interrupting the flow. This approach keeps you in the moment, fully present to enjoy the experience. Don’t get me wrong, you would have told me in detail about your plans and i work to ensure your wedding day continues to flow in the way you want.

2. Your Story, Not Mine

Every wedding is unique. My job is to tell your story, not create a generic highlight reel. When you look back at your photos, I want you to see the raw, real emotion and moments—the laughter, the tears, and everything in between.

3. Timeless Over Trendy

Posed photos and trendy filters might look great now, but will they stand the test of time? By focusing on genuine moments, your photos will feel just as special in 20 years as they do today. I don’t use instagram filters or horrible overlays.

The ‘99% Unposed’ Process: How It Works

You might be wondering, “If it’s all unposed, what exactly does a wedding photographer do?” Great question! Here’s a glimpse into my approach from start to finish:

Morning Preparations

Whether it’s your mum trying to figure out how to button your dress or your best mates cracking jokes over a pre-ceremony pint, the morning is full of golden moments. I’ll be there to capture them all without getting in the way.

The Ceremony

This is where the magic happens. I’m always on the lookout for those fleeting emotions—the groom’s nervous anticipation, the proud smiles of your parents, the uncontainable joy as you say “I do.” There’s no posing here—just real, honest storytelling. I of course give you tips about every step of the way – one being work on your resting bitch face during the ceremony.

Drinks Reception

This is where the fun kicks off. Guests mingling, glasses clinking, and the newlyweds soaking it all in. I’ll capture the atmosphere as you relax and enjoy being surrounded by your favourite people. But most importantly your not going to miss this, you will enjoy the drinks, the canapes and everything else that happens.

Portraits and Family Photos (Yes, Even These Are Stress-Free!)

I’ve saved this bit for last because it’s where couples often worry. You want beautiful portraits and family photos, but you don’t want to miss your own wedding to get them. Here’s the trick: I schedule these towards the end of the drinks reception.

Why? By this point, everyone is relaxed and most importantly, you’ve had time to actually enjoy your reception. When it’s time for portraits, I’ll whisk you away for 15-20 minutes whilst your guests are taking their seat, We’ll go for a walk without feeling awkward and no stupid posing. Then it’s back to the party. My rules are simple, hold hands, don’t look at the floor and don’t talk about anything serious.

Family photos? They’re important too, and I’ll make sure they’re quick, efficient and stress free. No one likes standing around for hours, so I keep things moving to get the shots you need without disrupting the flow. I recommend 8-10 groups and these can be done in about 20 minutes as long as everyone plays ball.

The Evening Celebration

When the dance floor opens, the real party begins. Whether it’s your nan joining in on a conga line or your friends going full-out to an 80s classic, I’ll be there, camera in hand, ready to capture every hilarious, heartwarming moment. I stay until around 9pm and that is just a rough guide.

Real Moments > Perfect Poses

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding photography is that you need to be perfectly posed to get great photos. Here’s the thing: real emotions, interactions, and moments are infinitely more compelling than any perfectly arranged pose. Your photos don’t need to be “perfect.” They just need to be you.

Think about it: when you look back at your photos, do you want to remember how awkward it felt standing in a stiff pose for 20 minutes? Or do you want to remember the joy of your best friend’s impromptu speech, the laughter during a family group hug, or the way your partner looked at you when no one else was watching? That’s what ‘99% unposed’ is all about.
